Buffalo Transportation seeks to consolidate operations to Scajaquada Street

A taxicab-turned-medical transportation company that provides non-emergency services across Western New York wants to consolidate its far-flung operations in Erie County to a single site in an industrial zone off Bailey Avenue in East Buffalo, near the former American Axle & Manufacturing Plant.

Buffalo Transportation, which already owns the properties at 300 and 320 Scajaquada St., is seeking to renovate the 20,200-square-foot building on the property, while expanding it with three additions totaling another 16,400 square feet.

That will reactivate a vacant site that is already zoned as heavy industrial, while also cleaning up the dead end of Scajaquada Street, and creating jobs, the company says. And it will simplify operations for the company, which is based at 289 Ramsdell Ave.

The current building includes 3,500 square feet of office space fronting the street, and another 16,700 square feet of warehouse space.

Plans call for partially renovating the offices, while converting the warehouse into dispatch, training, vehicle repair bays and support space. The additions will include a new 5,900-square-foot single-story metal building for more office functions, to be located along the west side.

Another 9,400-square-foot, one-story metal building will house a vehicle maintenance and repair facility. And a third single-story metal building of 1,100 square feet will be a new covered employee entrance to the building, on the east side.

The $3.5 million project will require major site plan approval and also crosses over lot lines, so Buffalo Transportation is asking the city to break off 0.4 acres from 320 Scajaquada to be combined with the 1.4-acre property at 300 Scajaquada. In all, the company owns 8.6 acres of land, including a portion of the site that sustained a gasoline spill in October 2007 that was cleaned up, according to Department of Environmental Conservation records.

Upon approval, construction is expected to last about 10 months.
